Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert
Definition & Purpose
Routers and switches are essential to networks as they route reams of information very quickly through the network, most important for the technology of the Internet. By relying on Internet technology to handle traditional corporate functions, companies can save millions of dollars per year.
The Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (CCIE) Routing and Switching certification program provides engineers with the knowledge required in a general internetworking environment. CCIE-Routing and Switching are able to install, configure, operate and troubleshoot complex routed LAN, routed WAN and switched LAN networks, and Dial-Access services. They have the advanced technical skills required to maintain optimum network performance and reliability as well as advanced skills in supporting diverse internetworks that use multiple technologies.
The Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE™) program sets the professional benchmark for internetworking expertise. After candidates have prepared for the CCIE certification track, they must pass a qualification exam as well as a two-day, hands-on lab.
The written and lab exams test different types of knowledge. The qualification exam is a 2-hour multiple choice computer based exam. It is available worldwide at Cisco authorized testing centers. Once a CCIE candidate has successfully passed the qualification exam, they can then proceed to book and attempt the lab exam. This lab exam is a 2-day hands-on practical exam and is offered only at selected Cisco locations worldwide.
The written Qualification exam concentrates on theoretical knowledge about networking, although some knowledge of Cisco equipment commands is also required. The two-hour, multiple choice exam is computerized and administered by Cisco authorized testing centers. The exam is closed book and contains 100 questions. No reference materials are allowed in the exam room.
The two-day lab exam emphasizes Cisco equipment command knowledge and network troubleshooting skills. In order to schedule time in a CCIE Preparation Lab or to schedule the CCIE Lab exam itself, you must first pass the Qualification exam. The CCIE candidate will be presented with a complex design to implement from the physical layer up. Candidates are not required to configure any end-user systems, but are responsible for any device residing in the internetwork, including hubs, etc. Network specifics, point values and testing criteria used to evaluate correctness of the individual configurations are provided. Upon completion of the implementation, the candidate will enter the troubleshooting portion of the exam. In this section of the test, the candidate is required to recognize, diagnose, and resolve faults that have been inserted into an internetwork by the lab engineer. Each configuration scenario and problem has pre-assigned point values. The candidate must obtain a minimum mark of 80% to pass.
In order to achieve CCIE certification status, the student must pass the following exam:
