ECG / EKG
Definition & Purpose
The EKG Technician is a medical specialist who knows how to give and interpret ECG tests to better understand the condition of the heart. The ECG Technician performs diagnostic tests related to the heart, recording the heart’s electrical impulses onto a paper strip. The pattern of the signals can tell the physician whether the heart is normal, experiencing electrical problems, under strain, or damaged.
The ECG Technician will administer and document various types of ECG monitoring, and will provide appropriate care of the equipment. The ECG Technician works in physicians’ offices, clinics, hospitals, and diagnostic centers.
The EKG Technician is the person responsible for performing diagnostic tests to access the heart rhythm and rate in patients. EKG`s are also performed before and after operations, during physicals, examinations of patients over 40, for patients with a history of heart disease, when patients are experiencing chest pains and when the Doctor deems it necessary.
This course provides an overview of basic cardiovascular terminology, anatomy and physiology. Focuses on proper placement of electrocardiogram (EKG) leads and maintenance of equipment to obtain an accurate 12-Lead EKG. This course teaches the student proper electrode placement, basic anatomy and physiology of the heart, measurement of time and voltage, PR intervals, QRS complex and arterial/ventricular rates. The student will also be able to identify the P, Q, R, S, T and U waves. This course also introduces the terminology and abbreviations used in this field. Hands-on experience in our own clinical setting is provided.
In order to achieve Certified EKG/ECG Technician status, the student must pass one of the following exams:
- CET: Certified EKG Technician (National Healthcareer Association)
- CCT: Certified Cardiographic Technician (Cardiovascular Credentialing International)
- Anatomy and Physiology of the heart Cardiovascular system
- Basic Electrciphysiology
- Sinus Mechanism
- Atrial Rhythms
- Junctional Rhythms
- Ventricular rhythms
- Atrioventricular (AV) blocks
- Pacemaker Rhythms
- Introduction to the lead ECG
- 12-Lead EKG operational technique and EKG interpretation
