Definition & Purpose
A thorough introductory course on human form and function, this course presents a large, complex body of scientific knowledge in an easily understood, conversational writing style. Focusing on concepts rather than descriptions, the text uses a "big picture" theme of body function and also explains the body's homeostatic regulation. For the first time, every new textbook includes a downloadable e-book, which is a fully searchable, electronic version of the text plus learning resources from Anatomy & Physiology Online - with animations by body system, images, an electronic coloring book, interactive exercises, and more.
Course Outline
Cardiology technicians are allied health support personnel who can work in a variety of settings. This program is ideal for the person who is interested in an expanded role in the medical field. Cardiology technicians assist physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac (heart) ailments. A cardiology technician is a knowledgeable health care professional who is educated and trained to perform diagnostic procedures at the request of the physician to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with cardiac disease. The work place will vary from doctors` offices to hospital cardiology departments. Cardiology technicians operate machines that record the electrical changes that occur during and between heartbeats.
This course trains the students in performing EKG`s, CPAC monitoring Holter, Event, and Blood Pressure monitor hookups. This program also focuses on a wide range of Cardiology terminology, along with a basic understanding of cardiac rhythms and abnormalities.
"Cardiology Technician course keeps up with the latest trends and developments in this field and educates the students accordingly. Students work on newer equipment and are encouraged to attend medical seminars to create the competitive atmosphere in the class and help students familiarize with the latest technologies to improve the overall training quality. One of the goals of this course is to train the students to interact with Health Care Professionals."
The Cardiology Technician course focuses on three major skills:
- Electrocardiography (EKG) - The electrocardiography (EKG) test measures electrical activity in the heart. The EKG can determine the rate and regularity of heart beats, the size and position of the chambers, and whether there is damage to the heart.
- Stress Testing - A stress test helps a doctor find out how well patients heart handles work. As the body works harder during the test, it requires more oxygen, so the heart must pump more blood. The test can show if the blood supply is reduced in the arteries that supply the heart. It also helps doctors know the kind and level of exercise appropriate for a patient.
- Holter Monitoring - The recording device of a Holter monitor is worn on a strap at your waist or over your shoulder. The electrical signals of your heart are picked up by two small metal pads (electrodes) attached to your chest, and these are connected to the recorder by wires. Holter monitoring provides a continuous 24- to 72-hour record of the electrical signals from your heart. While wearing the Holter monitor, you will also be asked to keep a diary of all your activities and symptoms. After the monitoring period, your health professional will compare the timing of your activities and symptoms with the recorded heart pattern.
This course prepares you for the following certification exams:
- CCT: Certified Cardiographic Technician
- CET: Certified EKG Technician
- Please visit the official CCI website for the latest CCT certification exam information
- Please visit the official NHA website for the latest CET certification exam information
- Anatomy and physiology
- Pharmacology
- Electrophysiology
- Arrhythmia Recognition
- EKG recording and interpretation: Electrocardiograph is the reading of the electrical impulses of the heart. An EKG can detect vital information regarding a person`s heart, including blockage, skipped or extra heartbeats.
- Holter Monitor and Scanning: A portable holter monitor is exhibited recording all of the heart`s activity. A disc or tape contained in the monitor is then scanned by the technician to detect any abnormalities.
- Stress Testing: This test consists of the patient being monitored by an EKG machine. The EKG is then able to detect any abnormalities of the heart under stress conditions.
