Definition & Purpose

Medical billing is a growing career, as insurance companies and the government are spending more time and money researching and controling claims fraud. A succesful medical billing specialist will know medical terminology, anatomy, be familiar with the succesfull medical billing specialist will know medical terminology, anatomy, be familiar with the forms that have to be completed and the required coding for insurance purposes.

This program not only provides the necessary skils to enter the medical field as an NHA Certified billing and Coding Specialist, but also to excel in clinics, nursing homes and hospitals with impressive office skills that take advantage of Microsoft Office 2007 and QuickBooks Profesional accounting software.

The program provides knowledge and skills needed to accurately report, transmit and track claims. This course will introduce the basic priciples and application of ICD-9-CM and CPT codes for diagnoses and medical services required for insurance reimbursement.

Course Outline

General Information

The course begins with an introduction to the patient care technician, as well as the guidelines for a safe and professional medical practice.

  • Medical Terminology: Students are taght prefixes, roots, and sufixes that together can be used to form over 11,000 medical terms.
  • Medical Transcription: This teaches students to transcribe medical reports using correct report format, abbreviation, symbols, and metric measurement rules.
  • Medical Law and Ethics: Students are taught terms, law ethics and bioethics. Also includes knowledge on HIPAA, informed and uninformed consent, do's and don't's when processing collections, Government insurance programs, durable power of attorney, variation of death and the effects on patients.
  • Medical Billing and Insurance: This program provides instruction and exercises in the steps of the billing process. Students will learn to perform fundamental concepts of procedural coding, CMS - 1500 forms, EOB statements, peg board accounting system, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield coverage.
  • Medical Office Management: Students are taught the role of health information management. They will learn how to explain registration procedures, handle the office properly during emergencies, appointment scheduling, record keeping, and filing procedures.
  • Operations in Medical Office: Students will gain information on basic operation in the medical office. Students will discuss interoffice meetings, communication, book keeping, financial record retention, labor laws, legal issues, and components of the employee selection process.

Prerequisites

1. Drug Testing: Students are required to undergo a 10-panel drug screen prior to the start of class. This drug screen is mandatory and the $40 fee is the students' responsability. Students must undergo drug testing trought PCCTI's authorized vendor (www.certifiedbackground.com or 1-888-723-4263 x7142).

2. Student must have a BACKGROUND CHECK performed. These checks are performed trought SIUC and are included in the cost of the tuition
