Medical Billing and Coding

Definition & Purpose

Medical billing is a growing career field, as insurance companies and the government are spending more time and money researching and controlling fraudulent medical claims. A successful medical billing specialist will know medical terminology, anatomy, be familiar with the forms that have to be completed and the required coding for insurance purposes.

PCCTI prepares you for the following certification exams:

National Healthcareer Association (NHA)

  • Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS)*

The program provides knowledge and skills needed to accurately report, transmit and track claims. Introduces the basic principles and application of ICD-9-CM and CPT codes for diagnosis and medical services required for insurance reimbursement.

Course Outline

You will learn the basic concepts and procedures to perform the tasks involved in health insurance as well as insurance claim forms. You will also gain knowledge of basic coding definitions and how to apply those codes to medical documentation.

The Medical Insurance Billing/Coding program includes:

  • Medical Terminology: Students are taught prefixes, roots, and suffixes that together can be used to form over 11,000 medical terms.
  • Current Procedural Terminology CPT: is a listing of descriptive terms and identifying codes for reporting medical services and procedures. The purpose of CPT is to provide a uniform language that accurately describes medical, surgical, and diagnostic services
  • HCPCS Coding: This program provides instruction and exercises in Modifiers, Supplies, Therapy, Outpatient PPS and Dental Durable Medical Equipment to Administrative Drugs Temporary DME, Orthotic/Prosthetic, Medical Services Pathology and Laboratory/ Diagnostic Radiology Temporary National Code (Non-Medicare), Vision Services
  • Using Medisoft software: NDCMedisoft delivers the best value in physician practice management solutions today. It is well regarded among physicians as the perfect combination of affordable software, proven performance and personal service.
  • Health Insurance: students will gain information on basic health insurance information; policy types; health plans for specific groups of people.
  • Medical Office Procedures: Provide customer support and service; schedule and maintain appointments for patients and practitioners, prepare and process medical records, identify ethical responsibilities of the medical professions, and maintain patient account records and prepare billing statements.
  • Ethical/Legal Aspects of Medical Records: Privacy&confidentiality, HIPAA and medical records, storage and destruction of old medical records, what records to obtain, how to request records and other information, and timing, formatting and content of charting.
  • Reimbursement Systems in Healthcare: Clinical coding and coding compliance, voluntary health insurance plans, government-sponsored healthcare programs, managed care plans and patient revenue cycle management.
  • Introduction to Computers: Basic introduction to use of computer systems, keyboard and navigation of personal computer.

Medical Billing and Coding introduces the principles and application of CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) and ICD-9-CM (International Classification of Diseases) to prepare students for a career in medical billing and coding in a variety of health care settings. Understanding of Evaluation and Management Services will be emphasized, and the student will become familiar with the most current ICD-9-CM and CPT manuals. This system converts uniform descriptions of medical, surgical and diagnostic services into five-digit numeric codes. Insurance reimbursement is then based on the codes submitted.
