Definition & Purpose

Ubuntu is a predominantly desktop-oriented Linux distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux. Ubuntu aims to use only free software to provide an up-to-date yet stable operating system for the average user, and features a strong focus on usability, regular releases, and ease of installation at the expense of platform diversity.

The Ubuntu Certified Professional is a training certification based on the LPI level 1 certification. To earn the UCP, candidates are required to pass the LPI 101, LPI 102 and the Ubuntu (LPI 199) exams. Exams can be written in any order. The course consists of ten 2 hour sessions and combines LPI 101 and LPI 102 and prepares the candidate for UCP examination.

Course Outline

(LPI 101) The course is intended for System Administrator and tests the candidate's ability to:

  • Performing a basic Ubuntu installation
  • Set up a workstation (including X - Graphical Window Server) and connect it to a network (LAN/Modem)
  • Implement simple tasks: assist users, add users to a larger system, backup & restore, etc.
  • Hardware and architecture
  • Working with the Linux command line (GNU & UNIX commands)

LPI 102 & LPI 199

  • The kernel - managing kernel modules, reconfiguring, building and installing a custom kernel and more
  • Printing - managing printers and print queues locally and remotely
  • Documentation
  • Shells, scripting, programming and compiling
  • Administrative tasks
  • Networking fundamentals
  • Networking services
  • Security
Prerequisites
None, the courses can be taken independently of each other although they are designed to follow a sequential order.
